Would you like a pattern made? Send me a picture and I will make a pattern from it. mbs31@mac.com

I used my Image-to-Pattern (ItoP) program to create the Mona Lisa and Hedy Lamar bookmark patterns, and I can use ItoP to create a pattern for you─ of your child, pet, or whatever. I am in need of data for improving ItoP's performance.

Below describes how I made a pattern of my little friend Juliana.

Black & white and grayscale (e.g. Hedy Lamar) patterns can also be made.

Making the Juliana pattern
I started with this 2 1/4" x 2 1/2" picture of Juliana.

Being worked on

There were three steps involved in the process:

  1. Scaling the image to half size gave this 82 x 92 pixel image,

    Being worked on

which results in a 7544 stitch pattern. The larger the size the better the pattern will look, but the size must be kept small enough to stitch.

  2. Eliminating the background reduced the stitch count to 6093.
  3. Being worked on

  4. Creating the pattern by adding colors─30 in this case─gave this final result, which would be 5.8" x 6.6" if stitched on 14 count Aida.
  5. Being worked on

The thirty colors used in the pattern are at the left, the original image (with background eliminated) is in the center, and the created pattern is at the right.

A two-page pdf file of the pattern and colors for stitching is output.
